Ukhanyo learner Siyabuswa Siyo
Every school should have on-site sports field so school children are able to develop to their full holistic ability. That is the purpose of the Departments of Education and Sports/Arts/Culture and needs to be realised.
The Ingrid Wheeler field allows Ukhanyo sports kids that opportunity and in an underprivileged area, that luxury. We are indeed fortunate.
Just ask Siyabuswa Siyo – no surprise that his nickname is Siya!. He has just been selected for the Western Province under-12 rugby team. Another Ukhanyo first. Ukhanyo rugby coaches Teddy Nyali, Alfred Mazosiwe and Aya Nadyokwe and the school are so proud.
Twelve players had been invited to the early trials, five went through to round two and Siya and Vuyolwethu Mejeni made the final trials. Ukhanyo has stepped up a notch in rugby.
Siya, a grade 5 learner, has played rugby and cricket since he was eight years old. He will be eligible again for the under-12 team next year. He is a flyhalf and Teddy says, “He is an excellent distributer of the ball and defender. He desperately wants to improve and is a good listener.”
Congratulations Siya and thanks to Fred Alger, whose gift of the field has created so much opportunity for each of the 1910 Ukhanyo learners.
