Nceba Jonas, Ukhanyo’s head coach, arranged a unique Heritage Day celebration of traditional dress and sport outfits at the school.
He was joined by the ‘Orlando Pirates supporters committee, Fish Hoek branch’ with the Winter rose Community Club, who celebrated Heritage Day together by focusing on their traditional dress, sport wear and gender equality. No soccer was played. Four community rival clubs joined the function – from Delft, Phillipi, Khayelitsha and Houtbay.
This is a community initiative to jointly embrace their communal heritage. Mr Mayeki and Nceba asked Living Hope to discuss with the group the ways to encourage gender equality in the township. This is one of the most important life skills that needs to be part of everyday life in South Africa. Respect for woman remains elusive.
Bringing the five community clubs together in a non-sports environment has increased social cohesion between these township clubs. It was a spectacular success.
Well done to the ‘Orlando Pirates Supporters, Football Club and Netball Club’. We hope this will be an annual initiative.
