Creating Opportunity
There are only 2 000 schools out of 25 000 schools in South Africa that have any organised sport or other after-school activities. This is disastrous for vulnerable and disadvantaged children in townships and rural areas. These learners then miss out on sport and other after-school activities which gives them confidence in a joyful and almost carefree way.
Kit, equipment, coaches, and the backing of the school staff are essential ingredients for creating these opportunities.
Creating a sports environment embraced by the school requires one additional ingredient – playing fields at the school.
The whole school needs to feel and see the joy, excitement and satisfaction of participating in sport.
MasiSports has provided home facilities. At Ukhanyo Primary, there are the three astro-turf cricket nets, the two 40 x 20 artificial surfaced multi-sport fields and a netball court.
By January 2019 this had doubled after school participation. Physical Training classes now use all these surfaces with a wide range of exciting and challenging activities. Every one of the almost 2000 learners experience the joy of exercise and learning sports skills in PT classes every week.
A 60 x 30 astro-turf field with foundation shock-pads will allow the school to host rugby, soccer and cricket matches to be held at school for the first time.
At Masiphumelele High School, MasiSports constructed two netball courts and their soccer and cricket players practice at Ukhanyo Primary School. The Atlas Foundation, in charge of rugby at the high school, levelled the available area and erected rugby posts for their practices.
These facilities are key to a school sporting culture.
