As the third term drew to a close, Ukhanyo Primary art teacher Lubabalo Pita reflected on the school’s colourful Heritage Day celebrations:
“This week we celebrated Heritage Day with great enthusiasm and pride, as learners and staff came to school dressed in their traditional attire. The vibrant colours and diverse styles showcased the rich cultural heritage of our community, creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere.
Throughout the day, learners participated in various indigenous games, including puca, ugqaphu, duva, mamcheli etc. These games not only provided an opportunity for fun and enjoyment but also served as a meaningful reminder of our cultural history and traditions. The laughter and excitement echoed in the schoolyard as learners engaged in friendly competition, fostering teamwork a among learners.
The day was not just about games; it was a beautiful celebration of identity and heritage. The participation of both learners and staff illustrated the importance of embracing our roots and understanding the values that shape our community.
Overall, Heritage Day was a resounding success, filled with joy and a renewed appreciation for our diverse backgrounds. The learners had a fantastic time, and the sense of pride in our heritage was palpable. We look forward to continuing this tradition in the future, celebrating our unique cultures and fostering a sense of unity within our school.”
