A breathtaking musical experience

Twelve Masi learners from the two school choirs, two educators, and a choir teacher were in awe of the performance of Orpheus McAdoo at Artscape. It is a true story of Orpheus and his minstrel troupe (children of USA slaves) who travelled and enthralled audiences in the UK, NZ, Australia, and South Africa. This musical was written and directed by the famous David Kramer. It was magnificent and the children loved the voices, story, backdrop, and the whole experience.

The tickets were by the kind invitation of Alex Gabriel, CEO of the Cape Town Opera. Both MasiSports and the CT Opera receive amazing support from Judith Neilson, so we are inextricably linked. The CT Opera has opened the high school to music, especially after the performance of Nessun Dorma by the legendary tenor, Lukhanyo Moyake, at the opening of the Masi High Sports Complex earlier this year. He filled the hall with his voice.

Madre Loubser, the head of youth development and education at Cape Town Opera, wrote, “During the first half of the performance, I sat in front of the kids and could hear their excitement and awe at everything happening on stage. It was a delightful experience!”

Expeditions like this, which open the eyes of learners to the possibilities that might be waiting for them, is a crucial piece of the holistic tapestry of the MasiSports model. As Michelle Obama stated, “The only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

Generational change comes from the youth seeing and experiencing the life that is out there waiting for them. Thank you, Cape Town Opera and Judith.
