A great start to 2022

2022 parents evening

Vince van der Bijl

The Ukhanyo Primary parents’ evening was a buzz of excitement. Over 300 parents came to the parents’ “start of the year” presentations by the Head and the SGB. This was on an evening of miserable rain and cold, which was testament to their respect of Headmaster Michael Tyhali, staff and coaches. The school is the hub of Masiphumelele and it is deeply respected by the whole community.

It was a fun and informative evening. After prayers, the Buddies (monitors) and the new educators were introduced. The Head explained the new school format from Monday 7th February, which was to get back to normal. Michael requested I say a few words, and I kept it to three sentences (!), mentioning the value of sport and life skills and a request to encourage their children to play sport.

These evenings are inspirational. The applause when the Buddies and new staff were introduced was deafening. Everyone involved in this school is child-centric and the learners are given care and love, academics, sport and after-school activities, English and Maths clubs, chess and so many activities to choose from. Above all, they are given individual attention and feel valued. This is truly amazing as there are 1 900 learners in this primary school. The staff and coaches positively help the learners navigate the many hurdles and socio-economic challenges in the township, giving them the confidence to dream and plan a better life and how they grow.

Ukhanyo Primary, take a bow.
Help MasiSports ensure that this excellent standard of a broad education is sustained generation after generation. This school is a gem.
