Masi High School and MasiSports are celebrating a momentous occasion this week as Skahle Nhlabathi, after three years of dedicated service as acting principal, has officially been appointed Principal of Masiphumelele High School. This well-deserved promotion marks a significant milestone not only for Mrs. Nhlabathi but for the entire Masi community.
Under her visionary leadership, the school has undergone a powerful transformation. The opening of the Masi High Sports Complex, featuring the state-of-the-art Judith Neilson Field, has unlocked a new world of opportunity for learners, blending sports, culture, and life skills into a truly holistic education platform. Learners now wear their school kit with pride, compete in inter-school leagues, and engage in activities that foster both personal growth and community spirit.
Thanks to ongoing support from The Atlas Foundation, rugby is thriving at the high school level. In a pioneering move, inter-house matches have been introduced for the first time, bringing with them excitement and camaraderie across grades. But it’s not just about sports – Masi High is blossoming in every direction. The establishment of a food garden, the introduction of dance classes, the formation of chess teams, and much more have created a vibrant school culture.
As Principal Nhlabathi puts it:
“There is a new pride in the school, and that has led to a feeling of calm, less gang aggression, and better studies.”
This transformation wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of dedicated non-profit partners. Organisations like Masicorp, Ikamva Youth, African Scholarship Fund, Waves for Change, and the Ackerman Golf Foundation have all played a vital role in expanding opportunities for Masi learners.
Recognition is growing. Just last week, the University of Stellenbosch acknowledged the progress at Masi High – a testament to what’s possible when strong leadership meets community support and shared vision.
Alongside Ukhanyo Primary, Masiphumelele High is proving that township schools can – and do – reach the standards of model C institutions. The success of these schools stands as a powerful example of how holistic education changes not just schools, but lives.
