Matt and Sam on their wedding day
By Vince van der Bijl
Now and again, something happens that blows your mind.
Matt Green, the eldest son of our very close friends, Cliffie and Karen Green, married Sam Linton in Franschhoek in December. It was a spectacular wedding. In the midst of all the planning, Matt did something “princely”. Matt asked those invited not to give presents but to donate to MasiSports! Imagine that, so thoughtful and generous.
The three Green ‘boys’ Matt, Jord, and Stu were younger than 10 when they taught Bev and I, who were in our 30s, about the birds (not the bees!) and the bush. We knew nothing. The first three birds we learnt about are still indelibly planted in our minds – the Lilac-breasted Roller, the Yellow-billed Hornbill, and the Fork-tailed Drongo. Standard fare today, I know, but these opened up a whole new, beautiful world of exploration. Learning about the bush is a life-changer, and the two families have remained close since then.

We seldom saw Matt after he went to the UK and Jersey, yet the bond remained. This generous fundraising gesture came out of the blue. Typical, though, of the thoughtfulness and support of the Greens.
Thanks, Matt and Sam, for your wonderful gesture.
