Thanks to the generosity of the Cape Town Opera, 65 Masi High learners from the choir attended a performance of the famous opera Aida.
The rendition of Verdi’s opera was stunning. It was a 100% all-South-African affair, and it had flair and ingenuity in set design, costumes, as well as the dancing and drama. An American opera enthusiast told us that he had seen over 300 Aidas, and this version was in his top five of all time. It was that remarkable.
Aida tells the story of an enslaved Ethiopian princess, Aida, who falls in love with an Egyptian general, Radamès. Their love is complicated by the war between their nations and the fact that Radamès is betrothed to the Egyptian princess, Amneris. Loyalties and love are tested, leading to tragic consequences.
The learners had this to say:
Anganathi: It was my first Opera – so talented and creative. My favourite part was when Radamès stayed loyal to Aida.
Akhanya: I loved the show and was inspired by Aida’s character. It was so lively, colourful, energetic, and creative.
Mbalentle: A great show. Aida is now my role model and has inspired me to continue with music and singing.
Elihle: The costumes and dancing were simply amazing
Inam: The show motivated me to have more passion in music
Abongile: The music, dancing, and creativity were special. The voices were just so inspiring.
Iminati: I loved the dancing and the singers. The voices were touching, and they motivated me to become a better musician.
Thanks, Judith Neilson and Alex Gabriel, for the invitations. You have ignited a passion for music, singing and performance.
