On Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September, teachers, school staff and community members gathered for the Courage to Care training, made possible through a partnership between MasiSports+ and Kerus Global. The two-day programme equipped participants with practical tools to better support, protect and care for vulnerable children.

A sincere thank you to Dr Marcia Ball and Dr Jennie Cerullo for facilitating this impactful training. Kerus Global works to equip communities, leaders and caregivers with knowledge and resources that help protect children and strengthen vulnerable communities.

The training will greatly benefit the staff of Ukhanyo Primary School and Masiphumelele High School, helping them better understand trauma, identify learners’ needs and create safer, more supportive learning environments. The opportunity was also extended to representatives from several community-based organisations in Masiphumelele, strengthening local collaboration around child wellbeing and protection.

Reflecting on the experience, Miss Kwanele Lunga from Ukhanyo Primary shared:

“The Courage to Care training was truly an insightful and eye-opening experience. It provided us with valuable knowledge and a deeper understanding of how we can better care for, support and assist our vulnerable learners. The knowledge and skills gained will empower us to recognise their needs, respond with greater compassion and create a safer, more supportive environment where every child feels seen, heard and valued.”

MasiSports+ is grateful to Kerus Global, the facilitators, participating schools and community organisations for making this important learning opportunity possible. Together, we are building a stronger, more caring community for the children of Masiphumelele.
