At Masiphumelele High School, something fresh is taking root — and it’s not just vegetables. On 17 September 2025, Masi Creative Hub, in partnership with Urban Harvest, Stichting Ibhongo, Douglas Murray Trust (DGMT), MasiSports+, and the Southern Africa Food Lab, launched the Masi Creative Hub Garden Champions programme at Masiphumelele High School.
The idea is simple: give young people practical gardening skills, improve nutrition at schools, and build a healthier, greener community together.
In 2025, our focus is on:
- Training Grade 8 learners in food gardening.
- Thus, supplying the school cooks to prepare healthy, organic meals.
- Growing and preserving crops for daily nutrition.
Food for Body and Mind
The Garden Champions programme is about more than vegetables. With healthier meals in the school feeding scheme and fresh produce shared through home gardens, the benefits reach approximately. 1,400 learners at Masiphumelele High. Better nutrition means better focus, stronger health, and a brighter chance at success in school and life.
For the cooks preparing meals at school, new training workshops bring fresh ideas on how to serve nutritious, affordable, and tasty meals every day. Parents, too, are invited to join, ensuring that healthy living becomes a family habit.
Beyond Sport, Beyond Limits
For MasiSports+, this partnership reflects our commitment to going beyond sport, beyond limits. While sport remains at the heart of our work, true youth development also means tackling nutrition, health, and community well-being. A hungry learner cannot thrive in the field or in the classroom.
Keeping learners rooted
None of this can grow without the community. Parents, Masi High School, and partners like the Creative Hub are central to the project’s success. Together, they make sure that every harvest meets the needs of the school kitchen, and that surplus food goes straight back to the students who grew it.
We wish our partners and learners well on this transformation journey!
