Girls’ u-13 soccer team remains unbeaten, even against the boys!

Gender equality at work.

Teddy Nyali, MasiSports coach co-ordinator, initiated a girl’s under-13 soccer team at Ukhanyo a month ago. The aim was to give girls an opportunity to play and choose between variety of sporting codes.

Teddy said: “It is also important to break the stereotype that girls only play netball. These girls have played schools such as Generations and Kommetjie primary schools, and they remain unbeaten.”

Recently they played in a five-a-side Coolplay tournament at Century City. They won all their games and then were invited to play an under-13 boys’ team from Pieter Langeveldt. Four goals were scored and the game was drawn 2-2.

Teddy related: “Ukhanyo girls were enthusiastically supported by their previous opponents, the Zonnebloem girls. Importantly the boys were suitably impressed with the girls’ performance. They had to dig quite deep in accepting an honourable draw! The boys were great, remained respectful and shook hands with grace after the final whistle – a true display of gender equity.”
