May is Mental Health Awareness Month. MasiSports+ is privileged to have partners aware of the need for mental awareness programmes in schools and society, which reduces the stigma and discrimination of those with mental illness. We are proud of the intentional focus that we, together, place on mental health.
CoolPlay
CoolPlay is an NPO that uses team sports to help children discover their potential and build essential psychosocial skills. They have been partners from the start of our journey in 2017. Their curriculum is delivered by Ukhanyo champions who are trained to provide the learners with relatable life lessons through fun and engaging sport-specific drills, especially in mental health. Every one of the 1910 primary school children receives life skills training at their weekly PT lessons, and at the beginning of each sports session.

MasiSports Social Coach
The Desmond Tutu Health Foundation (DTHF) and MasiSports+ have forged a partnership to assist teenagers navigate the challenging and deprived township environment. MasiSports funds the social coach (worker), Nomusa Ncayiyana, and DTHF manages that process, which provides a safe and confidential space for students to express their thoughts, emotions, and challenges. Additionally, by providing psychoeducation at the Grade 8 Life Orientation Lessons and at the DTHF clinic and gym, the social coach and DTHF equips learners with knowledge about mental health, healthy sexual practice, and resilience-building skills. This proactive approach promotes early intervention and empowers students to take care of their well-being, contributing to a healthier and more supportive school and home environment.

Team Sports
Research confirms that team sports, which include the cultural activities of chess, dancing, choir, and cadets, are associated with lower anxiety levels, improved mood, and better overall mental health. The social interaction and physical activity in team sports contribute to a sense of belonging and a release of endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. By focusing on shared goals and values, team development helps reduce the individual team members’ stress and anxiety. This, in turn, enables everyone to perform at their best, even when facing challenges.
