An intern at work as part of MasiSports’ new skills programme
MasiSports has added a new strategic pillar – socio-economic empowerment. Over the next three years, we aim to develop a methodology to help Grade 10 students and above learn soft skills that make them more employable. This initiative is intended to equip Masi High Old Girls and Boys with essential skills such as discipline, timekeeping, reporting, accountability, and understanding consequences. We plan to achieve this through job shadowing, learnerships, and internships. We are thrilled to have just started this endeavor.
In 2025, MasiSports will be providing funding for a learnership with Lalela, our art partner. We will sponsor an intern who has recently graduated from Masi High to work with Lalela in both Ukhanyo and Masi High. The intern will be trained in the art of teaching art, and upon successful completion, will be awarded a certificate to apply as an art teacher.
MasiSports is a member of the Sports for Social Change Network (SSCN), which has launched an engaging youth internship programme. This programme offers young interns from Masiphumelele and nearby areas a unique opportunity to collaborate with community partners for six months. The programme started on October 1 this year, and is scheduled to end towards the end of March 2025. Althea Farmer, the COO of MasiSports, has emphasised the deliberate selection of three community partners based in Masiphumelele to participate in this youth internship initiative. Each partner has actively recruited four youth interns. This programme underscores MasiSports’ ongoing commitment to the community of Masiphumelele to help the youth become employable.
Under the guidance of MasiSports, 20 interns from Masi have commenced their programme. These interns have been distributed among our church and school partners.
The intern contract is from October 1, 2024, to March 25, 2025, and requires a minimum of 64 hours of work per month. Interns will be expected to submit reports, complete specific tasks, and management reports. Through our partners, we have carefully selected high-quality interns and are looking forward to working with them.
This National Youth Service project is our first venture, and we are excited to help the youth gain workplace experience and a sense of service when they apply for a job. We therefore encourage other community partners to reach out to us, if you’re able to further support this initiative in any way (i.e. through further training and learning intern opportunities, self-employment opportunities and or employment).
MasiSports is committed to helping the next generation understand their strengths and visualise their potential future. Exciting times ahead! Email thabile@masisports.co.za if you’re able to provide further support.
