Ukhanyo Primary has its own love story – just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Nceba Jonas and Grade 4 teacher Beauty Nonzolo Mjanyelwa (now officially named Zusakhe Jonas) have recently been married.
Two elders representing Nceba paid lobola on January 8, and then on January 11th a small ceremony with a few of Nceba’s close relatives was held in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape. As she is newly married, Beauty will wear the traditional ‘makhoti’ outfit for a few weeks and in June the two families will meet for the first time, when Beauty’s family will visit Butterworth.
In accordance with Xhosa tradition, Beauty was given the new name of “Zusakhe Jonas “ by Nceba’s brother.
Nceba and Beauty, who is also an SGB member and netball coach, first met when she joined the school seven years ago as a teacher.
“It took us a long time to get married because it’s important to get to know a person first,” explains Nceba. “The amazing part is that when we met I had a new house that wasn’t finished – it was empty – and she asked me why I didn’t finish it and put nice stuff inside. I was stingy but she convinced me that I should buy stuff for it and now it’s very beautiful. I knew she was the right person for me.”
“She spent time with my mom in the holidays even when I wasn’t there. My mom is very happy with her – I think she likes her even more than me!”
