Empowered Through Sport: The Rising Success of Girls Sport at Ukhanyo Primary and Masi High School
At Ukhanyo Primary and Masi High School, the sound of cheering crowds and the sight of determined young athletes on the field are becoming a familiar and inspiring part of school life. Our girls’ sports teams have achieved remarkable success – not only in their results, but in the confidence, teamwork, and leadership they display every time they step onto the field or court.
The Power of Sport in Building Confidence and Equality
For many of these young girls, sport has opened doors to new possibilities. It teaches discipline, teamwork, and perseverance – values that extend beyond the sports field and into everyday life. Each training session and match helps our girls see what they are capable of, building a sense of self-worth and belief that they can take on any challenge.
At Ukhanyo Primary, the success of our netball teams and girls’ soccer teams has transformed the way they see themselves. They are not just participants – they are leaders, role models, and change-makers. Their victories, both big and small, remind us that when girls are given the opportunity to play, they learn to dream. Girls are also participating in cricket, rugby, chess and cycling at the school.
“Through netball I have made many friends. I am happiest when I am on the netball court” – says Analo Ndano, a Grade 3 learner at Ukhanyo Primary.
At Masi High, our girls’ teams are showing that empowerment and equality is possible through sport. Competing with pride and passion, they are breaking barriers and redefining what it means to be young women in sport. Their achievements this year is a testament to their dedication and to the supportive environment that encourages them to thrive.
At Masi High:
- The Girls’ Chess team won their league.
- The Girls’ soccer team went unbeaten all season.
- The Masi High netball teams had stellar seasons, finishing among the top positions in their respective leagues.
- Girls are actively involved in cricket, cycling and rugby. The rugby program is run by Atlas Foundation.
“Sport has helped me develop resilience and confidence, which has translated to other areas of my life” – says Oyama Kula, Masi High chess player.
