In the midst of the pressure of end-of-year exam time, seven Masiphumelele High School educators gave up one and a half days to complete their level two chess coaching course with renowned Western Cape trainer Andrew Talmarkes. The two Masi schools now have 11 chess coaches with a level two certificate!

In addition, Ukhanyo Primary teams are involved both in the inter-schools league and in playing in a local league with players of all ages at the Fish Hoek Library. This sport is taking off to such a degree that a small sports festival in December will have schools involved with three sports – netball, soccer and chess. Chess is now firmly embraced in the centre of our sports programme.

Last week Ukhanyo played against Zwaanswyk Primary – the under-13 team won and the under 11s lost. The children had a wonderful afternoon.
To add impetus next year, a donor has given us funds to purchase an outdoor chess set to be used in the quad, which will attract even more players in 2024.

We could not be more excited.
