A new sound is rising at Ukhanyo Primary School –the early notes of a Grade 2 mini orchestra. This MasiSports+ project is led by music teacher and former educator Brendon Le Page, with support from two Ukhanyo Primary educators, Mrs Nonzolo Mjanyelwa, Mrs Lulekwa Vimbi and Ukhanyo head coach Nceba Jonas.
The initiative brings a unique opportunity into a township school setting, with Brendon drawing on his experience running similar projects in the UK. This exciting project is helping young learners discover music for the first time.
It is not just about learning instruments; these learners are finding a new way to express themselves. Music builds confidence, discipline, and connection -offering a powerful outlet for creativity and growth.
The vision is to develop the first Masi orchestra, one that will perform at school events and musicals while bringing parents and peers together through shared experiences. The learners are learning the fundamentals with instruments such as recorders, djembes and marimbas. As they progress, the idea is to add string and brass instruments further down the line. So exciting!
This initiative reflects the growth of MasiSports+ from a sports and life skills-focused program into one that embraces culture, including art and music. Empowering these young learners and giving them access to lived experiences is so important.
This is a catalyst for hope, and to get a sense of what is possible. We are looking forward to seeing how this project grows, and who knows … the next great Beethoven might be right under our noses – in Masiphumelele.
