MasiSports was honored to be invited by Geoff von Klemperer to the grand opening of the new Astro at Grosvenor Primary School in Atlantis on 26 January 2026.
Constantia Rotary Club and The Rotary Club of Atlantis combined forces to build an Astro field for the school. This is the fourth Astro that Constantia Rotary has built and handed over to schools. The first was Westlake Primary, followed by Capricorn, Phillipi and now Atlantis. What an amazing achievement – these astros will make a big difference to thousands of youngsters who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to play sport on anything other than bare dusty grounds. Sport, combined with education, is important to the development of children; it builds confidence, team spirit, and improves academic results.
The opening was a grand affair. We were met by smart, polite young Grade 7s who showed us to our seats. Pastor Arries opened the field with a prayer, and the school choir sang the national anthem. Principal Mr Adams welcomed guests and thanked all concerned for the joint venture and for building an amazing facility for the school. He gave a brief history of the project and the difficulties that they had had to overcome on the way. One additional cost was the need to build a mole curtain to keep the moles out!
Other guest speakers included District Governor Pam Rawbone, Ross Kelly Rotary, MNED Director Wendy Horn, and Danny Petersen Atlantis Rotary. The ribbon was cut by President-elect Ross Kelly of Rotary and Terence Adams the Principal, officially opening the field. It is beautifully set-up. Two netball matches can be played simultaneously at either end while other activities take place in the center. There are lanes up the middle for athletics and a cinder track around the two sections for training. The school will share the facilities with other schools and community projects in the district.
What a positive and heartwarming initiative. The field is a wonderful achievement which will no doubt be a life changer for so many youngsters. Well done Constantia Rotary, and I look forward to hearing about the next one. Thank you for inviting us to attend this happy occasion.
