On Saturday there was an air of frivolity and energy when 12 educators, coaches, and learners met for their first recorder lesson. Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra flutist Monica Nolizwi, who trains in Gugulethu, Langa, and Khayelitsha, was there to begin the training sessions.
The recorder group now wants to meet her more often – they were enthralled. Monica has already sent videos for homework to the group. Those who are learning to become recorder teachers will be able to share their skills at both Ukhanyo Primary and Masi High in 2025. And so another cultural activity has rooted itself and will grow quickly in time.
Remember the ‘penny whistle’ songs and tunes in the 1950s and 60s that took the world by storm? There is no doubt that the recorder will do the same in Masiphumelele. Music is an essential learning for a child. Music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and the mind work together.
The vision of Judith Neilson is becoming a reality. Rock on, Monica!
