Noordhoek Open Studios inspires Masi artists

Art teacher Lubabalo Pita with the young artists and their work of art

What started as an expression of gratitude to Noordhoek Open Studios for their very generous donation of R43 000, collected from their renowned Open Weekend, became an inspirational afternoon.

At the event young Ukhanyo Primary artists, with educator and art teacher Lubabalo Pita, rolled out a rural masterpiece they’d created to express their appreciation for the donation.

The highlight was the speech by Grade 6 learner Ininathi Manimani, who shared the joy of going home to a rural village: “This painting depicts a village landscape, capturing the peace that we associate with village life. It reflects the calmness and sense of belonging we feel when surrounded by the simplicity and beauty of a village when we are back home.”

That took my breath away. How we forget what is important to these children, cooped up in a township. It underlines the importance of sport and cultural activities to allow them express joy and delight, which is essential to their happiness and growth.

Aimee Kuger of the Noordhoek Art Point gallery welcomed them with open arms. The visit showed the artists of Open Studios how their generosity has impacted the learners, allowing them to express themselves through art and explore their cultural roots.

Pita wrote: “Our visit to Noordhoek Artpoint not only strengthened our relationship with Open Studios but also inspired our learners to continue exploring art as a form of expression. The painting of the village will remain a cherished piece, symbolising the bonds of gratitude and the power of community support. We are excited to see where our creative journeys will lead us next.’

More than 100 Ukhanyo Primary and Masi High learners take art lessons, run by Lalela Art, which is funded by Open Studios. Art began at the schools because of the interest and funding of Open Studios over four years ago.

 Thank you, Open Studios.
