What an outstanding winter sports season it has been! Both Ukhanyo Primary School and Masiphumelele High School have shown not only exceptional athletic talent but also a deep commitment to teamwork, perseverance, and school spirit. From sports festivals to house matches, we left no stone unturned, as our learners have made us incredibly proud. Here’s a look back at the unforgettable highlights from this term:
Soccer
Soccer continues to grow in strength at Ukhanyo PS. The enthusiasm from our learners, especially the younger age groups and new players, has been inspiring.
Girls Soccer: At Ukhanyo a new wave of talent emerged this year, with our U/11 girls winning a two-day soccer festival – a fantastic achievement. Masi High girls’ soccer team remained unbeaten throughout the season – a historic feat worth celebrating!
Through soccer, many girls also developed valuable life skills, showcasing growth on and off the pitch.
Boys Soccer: The U/9 boys played a number of friendly matches and delivered phenomenal results. Our U/11 team and U13 teams both excelled in the various festivals they participated in, with the former bringing home the title of tournament winners.
At Masi High in only its second year of structured sports, the school has made waves across the peninsula. The U17 and U19 boys teams both finished 1st in Term 3, with the U15s securing a strong 2nd place. The U19 team proudly participated in the prestigious Kay Motsepe League for the first time. A standout victory came when the U19s won the tournament hosted by False Bay College. Across all terms, Masiphumelele’s teams consistently placed second in the league.
Netball
At Ukhanyo Primary this year, our netball teams showed resilience, unity, and dominance on the court. From U/8 to U/13, every age group rose to the occasion and delivered standout performances throughout the season. It was a season to remember, with Ukhanyo PS making a powerful impression on every opponent. Multiple girls were selected for U/11 and U/13 district trials, progressing as far as the third and fourth rounds – a testament to their talent and dedication.
Ukhanyo PS teams won several weekend Netball Festivals, showcasing their skill and teamwork. The passion was so high that many of the girls asked to train every single day – often having to be reminded to rest! That kind of drive is what champions are made of.
Netball at Masi High is going from strength to strength. This season, our teams showed that they are a force to be reckoned with.
Highlights include a 2nd place finish in the league, advancing to playoffs and participating in the competitive Fast Five Tournament. Strong performances across all age groups, showcasing a solid foundation for future success.
Chess
Chess made an impressive debut this year, marking a new chapter for both schools in strategy-based sports.
Highlights include, the Masi High team securing 2nd place overall in the inter-school league – narrowly missing out on 1st to Bergvliet High.
Our U17 girls not only dominated their division and brought home a trophy!
Many of the junior players at Ukhanyo have taken their interest in chess further, by joining the Fish Hoek Chess Club, and they are thriving!
Rugby
Rugby continues to be a source of pride for Ukhanyo PS, with dominant performances across all age groups.
Our U/9 team excelled at the South Peninsula Future-Gen Festival, setting the tone for a brilliant season. All our teams excelled in their various age categories, with several players being invited to trials, with one making it as far as the third round.
The Atlas Foundation continues to facilitate and develop the rugby program at Masi High School. We are ever grateful for the role they play in developing rugby and providing a safe space for learners at Masi High School.
Interhouse
To top all of this off, last term we saw Masi High School host its first interhouse sports event with overwhelming success. This term, Ukhanyo Primary followed suit. Soccer and netball interhouse matches took place, and what a day it was. Interhouse matches not just creates friendly competition and rivalry, but it creates a sense of school pride and leadership. This is testament to the continued role sport plays in holistic school development. Ukhanyo head coach Nceba Jonas said; “I loved how everyone, coaches, teachers and interns got involved to make the day a success. The kids loved it. This was special.”
In closing, from the netball courts and soccer fields to the chessboards and rugby fields, this winter season has been nothing short of phenomenal. To all the learners who participated – your dedication, sportsmanship, and passion have not gone unnoticed. To the coaches, teachers, and staff – thank you for believing in our children and helping them shine. We are proud of every tackle, every goal, every try, every point, and every step taken in the name of progress and pride for Ukhanyo Primary and Masiphumelele High School.
Let’s keep this momentum going as we head into the final stretch of the year – and here’s to an even stronger 2026 winter sports season!
