Ukhanyo Primary hosted Langa’s Vusa, Generations from Kommetjie, and Westlake a week before the Barbarian Grand finale this weekend. It was a resounding success, with parents flocking to Masiphumelele to watch the under-9s play rugby.
The last event of the series, held at Sun Valley this weekend, was no different in excitement but colossal by comparison. As well as hosting the Barbarian under-9 teams, the school also hosted an additional 10 netball teams and 10 under-8 rugby teams. Wow, it turned out to be an amazing event with a glorious day to match. The market of kiosks added to the excitement.
The vision of the Barbarian tournament was to encourage community integration, embrace gender equality, and improve the standard of rugby. These aims were all realised. Players from the different schools became friends and the standard of play improved every match. Girls always surprise the spectators with their fearless and inventive play. They tackled and ran with the best.
The day was buzzing as coaches and parents encouraged their kids and teams, who rose to the ocassion. Referees often expressed their pleasure at the standard and intensity of the matches.
The Barbarian RFC would be proud of their young charges.
The final match between Barbarian South and Barbarian North ended in two tries apiece – fittingly. Barbarian North was made up of Bishops, Primrose, and Vusa, while Barbarian South consisted of players from all the participating South Peninsula 10 schools. What a match!
Thank you Fish Hoek, Paul Greyling, Reddam, Ukhanyo, and Sun Valley primary schools for hosting the tournament events. They were dedicated to making the tournament special. The coaches of the valley and beyond are simply excellent in their skillset, motivation, and constant positive encouragement. They are inspirational, laying the ground for future Springboks.
And so, the curtain closes on another wonderful tournament. On behalf of MasiSports and Masicorp UK, thank you the Barbarian RFC for your generous support.
